Bible Personalities: Joshua
Joshua served God on a life-long journey of faith. He lived the roles of slave in Egypt, soldier, servant, a type of ‘saviour’ and a saint. Serving under Moses, he went as a spy to Canaan. After the death of Moses, God chose Joshua to lead Israel into the Promised Land. God confirmed Joshua’s leadership by backing up the springtime waters of the Jordan River.
God provided supernatural help in taking the walled city of Jericho. Joshua obeyed God’s instructions and captured the besieged city. The people marched around the city. On the seventh day, trumpets sounded and the people shouted at Joshua’s command. The walls fell flat.
Joshua led through difficult events at the city of Ai and with the Gibeonites. Then Joshua had to confront five Amorite kings. He took them by surprise. When they tried to flee, God rained hailstones down on them.
Joshua divided the land among the Israelites. He established cites of refuge and specific towns for the Levites so they would serve throughout the new nation. At age 110, Joshua reminded the Israelites and their leaders that God fought on their behalf. Finally he admonished them to serve God and never forget His laws.
