Bible Personalities: Moses
To avoid death from the Egyptians, Moses’ parents set the 3-month old baby adrift in the reeds of the Nile. Pharaoh’s daughter found him there, adopted him and named him Moses (meaning “drawn out”). Moses became educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians in preparation for becoming Pharaoh.
When Moses saw an Egyptian taskmaster beat a Hebrew slave, he killed the oppressor. Now Moses had to flee to Midian. There he married Jethro’s daughter Zipporah.
God introduced Himself through a miraculous burning bush that didn’t burn up. God revealed that He would have Moses deliver His people from Egyptian slavery. Moses resisted the call. God persuaded him by choosing his brother Aaron as a spokesperson with him.
After informing the Israelite leaders, Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh. Pharaoh refused their plea even when God brought 10 successive plagues. The 10th killed Egypt’s firstborn. The Egyptians then pleaded with Israel to leave...hastily.
God directed Moses to go into the wilderness by way of the Red Sea. God showed His power by dividing the waters of the Red Sea. Moses led the Israelites for 40 years in the wilderness. God gave them the 10 Commandments, in stone, through Moses.
Not since then has there arisen a prophet like Moses whom the Lord knew face to face (Deu 34:10-12). Discover more about Moses’ dramatic life at:
