Bible Personalities: Peter
Jesus knew very well who He was calling as disciples. Centred around the Sea of Galilee, Peter fished with his brother Andrew. They partnered with James and John, the sons of Zebedee. Upon meeting Peter, Jesus said, “ You shall be called Cephas”, Aramaic for “Stone”, or “little Rock”. Scripture refers to him as Simon Peter with Simon being his first name.
While fishing, the disciples fought a violent storm. A man traversing the waves on foot startled them. Christ spoke to reassure them. The ever-impulsive Peter replied saying, “command me to come to you on the water”. Jesus did. Peter started walking but panic set in and he began to sink. Peter cried out and Jesus reached out to him, saying, “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?”
Before the crucifixion, Christ warned Peter he would deny Him three times before the rooster crowed. And Peter did. However, after conversion, the Holy Spirit worked in Peter to magnify his abilities. He delivered a powerful sermon, recorded in Acts chapter 2, and continued to feed Christ’s sheep and lambs. He reminded us in his final epistle of Christ’s transfiguration. Peter’s faith stood strong even through martyrdom. Read more about Peter at:
